Initial stage of hair fall is an indicator of derangement of health-equilibrium, if its corrected in the initial stage and the causative factors are removed then both hair and general health can be saved, so it’s better to consult a doctor as soon as possible of observable hair loss.
Hair loss can cause great distress, and there are many misunderstandings about its causes and treatment.
Probably the most common type of hair loss is the so-called ‘ male pattern baldness ’, which, despite its name, can affect women as well as men with loss of hair. Some women suffering from this condition can be helped with medical assistance and proper treatment.
There are many other types of hair loss which can also cause baldness and do respond to advice with medical assistance. There are also some types of hair loss which can have a non-surgical recovery.
Excessive hair loss can often be a symptom of some other problem or variation in the metabolism of the body and for this reason, co-operation between the patient and the trichologist doctor is often necessary.
Problems of the scalp, ranging from dandruff to more inflammatory conditions, occupy much of a trichologist’s time. As with the hair, these problems can be symptomatic of some other metabolic variation. Stress, poor diet, or even some allergies to certain foods, can be responsible for the build-ups and shedding of dead skin cells leading to hair fall. The management of hair and scalp that are excessively greasy is another area in which the advice of a qualified trichologist is often sought. Here, guidance on the right type of shampoo for any particular individual, and on its frequency of use, might be particularly relevant, to arrest baldness.
Problems with hair texture can be caused by over exposure to heat or strong chemicals, or by many of the other stresses and strains to which we subject our hairs very often. In such cases, co-operation with the Trichologist Doctor is obviously important, and “it indicates that Trichologists’ training includes both the medical and the cosmetic in areas not normally covered by doctors alone”. Hair texture problems usually respond very well to appropriate advice and treatment, as the causes, once discovered, can often be reduced or eliminated altogether.
It has a physiological aspect – keeps the sun off our heads, and sweat out of our eyes.
We have over 100,000 hair follicles on our scalps (from birth) we do not grow new ones!
Hair is a dead appendage, which is to say that there are no nerve endings or blood vessels in it, so it cannot react to an external problem, you can break it, but you cannot infect it.
The hair follicle however is living and that is where most of the hair problems lie, leading to hair loss.
The hair bulb (thing which makes the hair) is one of the fastest dividing cells in the body...which is why hair is so affected by chemotherapy.
The hair is made up of three layers:
Cuticle: Overlapping scales of hard keratin which protects and binds the inner fibres of the hair.
Cortex: makes up the majority of the hair, from tightly wound protein fibres (bit like a rope). Medulla: sometimes not even present (usually is a hollow in the middle of the hair).
Hair on the scalp grows about .3 to .4 mm/day or about 6 inches per year. Unlike other mammals, human hair growth and shedding is random and not seasonal or cyclical. At any given time, a random number of hairs will be in one of three stages of growth and shedding: Anagen, Catagen, and Telogen.
Many commonly prescribed prescription drugs can cause temporary hair loss, trigger the onset of excessive hair shedding and eventually male and female pattern baldness. Note that the drugs listed here do not include those used in chemotherapy and radiation for cancer treatment.
Your doctor may not mention hair loss as a side effect of some drugs, so don't forget to do your own research and read the drug manufacturers complete warnings. Though we do not recommend not taking a prescribed medication purely to 'possibly' stop having the side effect of hair loss, we urge you to consult your doctor, specialist or qualified trichologist if you have any queries about your medication that contribute to hair loss.
Genetic hair loss cannot be cured, but it can be dramatically be slowed in many cases.
For those seeking to gain added hair (sometimes referred to as ‘hair replacement’) in the form of wigs, extensions or weaving, guidance can be offered for regain therapy.
Advice and support can be given to those people who habitually pull their hair. Likewise, information, guidance and support are also given to those people who have lost hair through chemotherapy treatment.
In cases of scalp disorders in particular, it is possible that your Trichologist will prescribe treatment creams and shampoos for use either in the clinic or at home. These products should always be used in strict accordance with instructions by the Trichologist.
Hair is not mealy a subject of attraction but, the psychological impact of a hair loss can be staggering, even if it does not 'affect' anyone physically. Here are some other areas of intense interest regarding hair problems and hair in general.
